How urbanization promotes innovative mobility solutions
The infrastructure of a city is the central network that keeps it moving and connects people. With our mobility solutions, we get people to their destination safely, quickly and efficiently. In order to maintain and expand dynamic mobility within cities, we deal with the demands of urbanization on a daily basis. We use this challenge to develop and implement innovations that literally move urban mobility forward.
We know that urban structures are expanding. Our customers’ living and working spaces keep getting denser. This raises a demand for solutions that transport more people in less time. Innovation is the answer to that. For example: With our two innovations - MULTI and ACCEL - we have paved the way for more efficient mobility in urban areas.
MULTI – an integral part of smart buildings
MULTI is the world’s first ropeless elevator for high-rise buildings. It carries several cabins, that can move vertically as well as horizontally, in a single hoistway. Michael Cesarz, CEO MULTI, explains why this innovative elevator is an out-of-the-box product:
“To put it simply: We cut off the ropes. This certainly is a very disruptive approach. Until today, many people think an elevator depends on ropes. That is no longer true. With Nikola Tesla’s invention of the linear drive and the new megatrend of electrification (which, by the way, began after the start of this project about 7 years ago), we created new opportunities for the transportation of people in buildings. With MULTI we are more flexible due to the number of cabins in our systems.”
As the trend goes more and more towards smart buildings and even smart cities, MULTI is a flagship-product for this development: “We can reduce the volume of hoistway; thus, we massively shrink the building core. Moreover, we have highly digitalized MULTI as such, which is mandatory to play an important role in the smart building/smart city movement in the near future.”
Why MULTI is an innovation that thrives in the context of urbanization
Cesarz goes on to shine a light on MULTI’s ability to send and receive data. This means it is a product that can communicate – for example with our preventive maintenance solution MAX. This connectivity is the basis for smart buildings, smart infrastructures and - in the near future - entire smart cities: “I suggest we look at transportation from a different perspective. As soon as we connect a transportation system like MULTI in combination with MAX to a building, both sides exchange information. This is the basic requirement to optimize services, e.g. by analyzing the building use from the elevator’s point of view.”
ACCEL – smart speed adjustment and increased transport capacity
Conventional moving walks are limited to a single speed. If the amount of people traveling on a moving walk increases, so does transportation time. This is not the case with our innovative ACCEL. Michael Cesarz explains what makes our moving walk special:
“What makes ACCEL unique is that, in contrast to conventional moving walks, it accelerates during the ride but decelerates to normal speed when leaving the system. This allows us to increase transport capacity in the city, which offers huge opportunities, especially in the face of urbanization. Due to its continuous movement, ACCEL is able to virtually eliminate waiting times.”
How does ACCEL improve mobility within urban infrastructures?
Time is the key word. A negative aspect of urbanization is that people have less time. Reducing waiting and transportation time is a challenge that ACCEL is tackling as one of our innovations for urban mobility:
“I think that ACCEL fills the gap between conventional moving walks and the Autonomous People Movers (APM). This can be useful to increase the number of people transported, e.g. in airports, conference centers, downtown areas or subway stations. That way, up to 30% more passengers can be transported – without waiting areas or waiting times.”, Cesarz explains.
Simplifying urban mobility by combining innovative solutions
However, in order to pave the way for interconnected mobility in urban structures, our innovations will not be applied separately, but jointly: “In the near future, we will improve the quality of public transportation by increasing the connectivity between subways. In addition, ACCEL connects the various means of transportation, e.g. in communication with our MULTI.”
Urbanization holds great potential for the expansion and interconnection of our mobility solutions in order to create and expand an efficient and dynamic urban infrastructure. Therefore, we have just begun with our work on innovative mobility products. There is more to come and an exciting future ahead of us.
